Ray Dolby Professorship of Theoretical and Experimental Physics

The Board of Electors to the Ray Dolby Professorship of Theoretical and Experimental Physics invite applications for this Professorship from persons whose work falls within the general field of the Professorship to take up appointment as soon as possible.

Candidates will have an outstanding research record of international stature in the broader field of quantum phenomena and technologies, including but not limited to development of novel quantum devices, precision measurements at the quantum level, and investigations of topological and layered materials and devices. The candidate will also have the vision, leadership, experience and enthusiasm to build on current strengths in maintaining and developing a leading research presence. They will hold a PhD or equivalent postgraduate qualification.

We are seeking two Purchasing Administrators to join the department's Finance Team as part of a refreshed 'core' structure for purchasing in the department. You will undertake a full range of purchasing and procurement duties within the Department's Finance Office, following University policy, procedures and best practice. Reporting to the departmental Purchasing Supervisor, the role-holder will ensure that all purchasing adheres to best practice and guidelines issued by the University Procurement Service, in particular obtaining best value for the University whilst maintaining awareness of sustainability goals. The successful candidate will be able communicate and work effectively with multiple stakeholder groups to deliver efficient ways to source goods and services for the wide range of activities undertaken by the department. Advanced Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Physics is recruiting an apprentice to their training scheme to start in September 2024. The successful candidate will undertake a structured training programme in Mechanical Engineering. The role is workshop based and the use of equipment used in manufacture both manual and CNC machines plus design as the primary skill using computer aided design (CAD), for which training will be given.

The scheme offers:

We are seeking a Senior Teaching Associate in the field of Computational Continuum Modelling and High Performance Computing in the Department of Physics. This post is to support the expansion of the cohort size of the MPhil in Scientific Computing https://mphil.csc.cam.ac.uk/

The successful candidate will provide support and contribute to the continuum stream and the high performance computing teaching schedule, and are therefore expected to have extensive experience in those areas. In particular you should be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of, and show practical experience with, the mathematics of systems of nonlinear inhomogeneous partial differential equations, and shock-capturing, Riemann problem based numerical algorithms for their solution. You must also be proficient in C++ and the techniques required for software development best practice. Familiarity with methods for high-performance computing such as parallelisation is essential. You will have a proven track record of delivering lectures or computational practical classes, and be an excellent communicator. You must be highly organised and motivated and should demonstrate aptitude for programme coordination. You will hold, or be imminently completing, a PhD in mathematics or physics (or a cognate discipline). Due to the fast-moving nature of the topics covered in the MPhil, you would be expected to participate in the research activities of the research group associated with the programme (Laboratory for Scientific Computing), to maintain your knowledge of the current status of research, and techniques used within them.

You will support the MPhil primarily by: the creation and delivery of course modules; the supervision, assessment and examination of modules, the provision, supervision and assessment of written assignments and research projects across a range of continuum and HPC topics. You will also participate in the administration of tasks associated with the academic delivery of these programmes like overseeing the seminar series and industry led modules, and the coordination and delivery of non-examined short courses on advanced topics or transferable skills.

PhD Studentship in the framework of the MSCA Doctoral Network GLITTER: Advanced Bayesian analysis and optimisation (Fixed Term)

Summary: Full-time PhD position funded by UKRI, in the context of the ERC doctoral network GLITTER (12 PhD students), to perform doctoral research in the development of modern antenna technology and radio instrumentation for GNSS-R and Radio Astronomy from space. The PhD candidate will join a multidisciplinary team and will be supervised by Dr Will Handley alongside data scientists at PolyChord Ltd (a spin-out company from the University of Cambridge) and researchers from Dr Will Handley's group based in the Kavli Institute for Cosmology, University of Cambridge. The PhD candidate will benefit from the GLITTER events in order to further improve technical and complementary skills: four one-week training schools, and three workshops. In addition, the PhD candidate will interact with CSIC and SYNTONY through 3 month secondments working with Dr Cardellach and Dr Carrie. `

Description: The next decade will see a revolution in satellite configuration and data processing, with the launch of large constellations of small satellites coincident with ever more demand for earth and sky monitoring. This PhD project aims to develop and apply the cutting edge of Bayesian analysis and machine learning to the optimisation of satellite configurations for GNSS-R. Combining the data science expertise of Dr Handley's Cambridge lab and PolyChord Ltd company with the expertise of the GLITTER network, the PhD candidate will build and deploy the next-generation of analysis tools for the future of satellite earth observation.

Projects will include: - Developing tools for optimising cubesat configurations using PolyChord algorithm as a global optimiser underarbitrary nonlinear constraints - Exploring the application of Bayesian parameter estimation, model comparison and tension quantification in GNSS-R problems - Applying the cutting edge of Likelihood-free inference techniques for simulation-based predictions - Exploring the use of machine learning emulators for enhancing the above processes in speed and accuracy

PolyChord Ltd is a spin-out company (SME) from the University of Cambridge, transferring technology from academia to industry, with current applications including rail monitoring, sensor placement optimisation, protein folding, and battery design. It has a long-term interest in the application of it's know-how and IP to the space sector, and the PhD candidate will be a key part of this process.

Summary: Full-time 3 year PhD position funded by UKRI, in the context of the ERC doctoral network GLITTER (12 PhD students), to perform doctoral research in the development of modern antenna technology and radio instrumentation for GNSS-R and Radio Astronomy from space. The PhD candidate will join a multidisciplinary team and will be supervised by faculty from the Radio Astronomy group of the Cavendish Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. The PhD candidate will benefit from the GLITTER events in order to further improve technical and complementary skills: four one-week training schools, and three workshops. In addition, the PhD candidate will do a research stay (6 months) at the Universite catolique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Nuevue, Belgium, to work with Prof. Christophe Craeye, lead of the GLITTER project.

Description: Global Navigation Satellite Systems-based Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is a powerful way to retrieve information from a reflecting surface (e.g. for Earth observation) by exploiting GNSS as signals of opportunity. Depending on i) the sensing platform (ground-based, airborne, spaceborne), ii) the reflecting surface (ice, sea, land), and iii) the number of antennas (typically one for ground-based applications, and two in airborne/spaceborne receivers); the system/receiver provides different results, which allow for different applications. One of the main challenges for modern GNSS-R applications is the detection of extremely faint signals in the presence of noise and/or interference. Equally, radio cosmology from space-based platforms, aims at the detection and study of minute radio signals of cosmological origin, in the presence of much brighter noise signals.

From a front-end / antenna point of view this calls for innovative designs of both the antenna and radio receiver aswell as the calibration techniques to enable maximum science extraction. Frequency bandwidth, spectral smoothness and compactness are some of the key design drivers for such instruments to be airborne on small, power-limited platforms. Exploiting state of the art antenna technology (e.g. metasurfaces and lenses) the PhD student will work on to design of novel antenna systems and calibration techniques for application-specific solutions, meeting the need for high information and data volume and high dynamic range.

The student will be exposed to the extra-disciplinary field through a secondment at a partner close to the end application to realise the impact of instrumental design and calibration. At the end of the project, we would expect the student to have developed suitable metrics to quantify the performance of an optimal antenna system design for modern GNSS-R and space-based Radio Astronomy applications; Design and computational modelling of a wideband, light and steerable antenna for GNSS-R applications (also contributing to the prototyping and test of "best" design according to the metrics developed); and to develop suitable calibration strategies for the specific application.

Requirements for the candidate: -MSc degree in Physics, Electronic Engineering, or related fields. -Solid mathematical background, outstanding academic records, and excellent communication skills in oral and written English. -Knowledge on basic radio instrumentation and Matlab/Python programming skills. -Knowledge on GNSS and/or Radio Astronomy are a plus.

It operates from within the Physics department but is serving as a gateway to Cambridge Physical Sciences and Technology overall, linking through to several departments as well as outwards to industry and businesses of any size. Research Associate (Fixed Term)

The VISIONLAB, led by Dr Sarah Bohndiek, uses next-generation imaging sciences to advance our understanding of tumour evolution. We apply the latest multispectral imaging hardware, together with biophysical models and machine learning methods, to studies in both mouse models and patients.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join the VISIONLAB, which is co-located in the Department of Physics and the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute at the University of Cambridge. You will drive forward a multidisciplinary project advancing our understanding of optical wearable technologies. In particular, you will be responsible for pioneering new spectroscopy technologies that can be applied in a wearable setting to provide accurate quantification of haemoglobin and other relevant biomarkers.

The VISIONLAB is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and curiousity-driven individual with a PhD in a topic related to biomedical optics. Experience in human multispectral imaging, creation of dynamic blood phantom circuits, Monte Carlo modelling, and computational image reconstruction are essential. Practical knowledge of translational research in clinical trials and preclinical research in animal models are desirable. You should be able to demonstrate a strong track record of scientific publication and presentation at international research meetings, commensurate with their research experience. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the laboratory, excellent communication and team working skills are essential. Key responsibilities will include: development of a prototype wearable approach suitable for use in a phantom and clinical setting; advanced computational modelling and simulation; collection and analysis of experimental data; and supervision of graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratory.

A position exists for Research Associate in 21-cm Cosmology Data Analysis and Interpretation.

The aim of the role is to study the early epochs of the Universe (Dark Ages, Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Re-ionization) via analysis of the 21-cm line from atomic Hydrogen. With several promising experiments (both single antenna and interferometric) attempting the detection and the study of the 21-cm hyperfine transition, this is currently one of the hottest areas of cosmology studies. The postholder will work on analysing the data from the radio telescopes using advanced Bayesian pipelines, aiming at the elusive detection. Furthermore, a successful candidate will be expected to interpret the data and constrain state of the art theoretical models of the cosmology and astrophysics governing the early epochs of the Universe.

We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher to work on analysis and astrophysical interpretation of the data coming out of the 21-cm cosmology experiments we are currently working on (e.g. REACH, project funded by an ERC Consolidator grant via UKRI funding and where Cambridge is the lead institution, and HERA). The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team of astronomers, physicists, and engineers. They could also join other related efforts, such as the development of data pipelines for the Square Kilometre Array 21-cm experiments or the CosmoCube space mission, as well as to develop their own research.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or close to obtaining) in physics, astronomy or closely related area with a proven track record in radio cosmology. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in 21-cm cosmology as demonstrated by publications in major journals. A solid understanding of Bayesian statistics is desired. The candidate will also have the ability to communicate effectively its own research and to perform relevant tasks for the projects they will work on, including liaising with academic partners, organisation of meetings, etc.

We are seeking an experienced System Developer/Administrator, who will participate in creating IT infrastructure that will support the next generation of scientific discovery, as part of the Cavendish Laboratory's £300m Ray Dolby Centre project. Joining a local IT Services team of 13 people, you will become a member of the 6-person IT Infrastructure group as a systems developer. You will share responsibility for maintaining and improving our application and server infrastructure, including our locally developed digital signage and buildings occupancy systems (Python, Flask, Raspberry Pi), which are now used across 22 University of Cambridge institutions. Ongoing work also includes maintaining and developing our WordPress hosting service and other business support applications, as well as general server and network automation applications/scripts. Major upcoming coding projects include significant changes to our teaching information system, Jira Service Management integrations with rollouts to multiple business functions, and a variety of API work connecting third-party software and scientific systems together as part of integrated workflows designed for use in our new building. You will ideally have significant experience with web-based software development, preferably on Linux servers, where you can also act as a system administrator and troubleshoot application issues. We primarily develop systems using Python (Flask, Django, PostgreSQL) and PHP, using GitLab (CI/CD) within an Agile project planning approach supported by Jira Software. The nature of the role means some work onsite will be required, but hybrid working is supported. Position Description: The Cavendish Laboratory's Quantum Matter group is looking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to investigate electronic and magnetic states in unconventional superconductors. The successful applicant will study the electronic structure of superconducting quantum materials near quantum phase transitions by examining quantum oscillations in high magnetic fields and at low temperatures. Material classes to be investigated include narrow-band d- and f-electron intermetallics, pnictides, and transition metal oxides such as the ruthenates and cuprates. The group operates a wide range of crystal growth and characterisation equipment, including a mirror furnace, two rf-induction furnaces and a wide range of box and tube furnaces, a PPMS, two SQUID magnetometers and a VSM, and we have access to relevant x-ray facilities within the University. The group has developed key high pressure techniques relevant to this project, such as patterned high pressure anvils, microcoils within the anvil cell sample space, and rf tank circuitry for indirect resistivity measurements in anvil cells. The low temperature, high field work will be carried out mainly at the Cavendish lab, using our 20.4 Tesla/1mK cryomagnetic facility, with opportunities for further measurements at international high field facilities (e.g. US, France, Holland). Complementary high pressure lattice structure determination by x-ray diffraction will take place at the Diamond Light Source Synchrotron in the UK. Within this programme of research, you will be particularly responsible for low temperature, high magnetic field, high pressure measurement and technique development.

Eligibility: You should have a PhD (or close to obtaining) in Physics or in a related discipline, with a strong track record of research in the area of experimental correlated electron physics. You should have experience with at least one of the experimental techniques relevant to the project (high magnetic field measurements, measurements at cryogenic temperatures, high pressure measurements). Other skills which will be valued include: crystal growth, computing, knowledge of the physics of strongly correlated electron systems. A demonstrated ability to work independently is essential.

The Frontier of Atomistic Simulation Techniques (FAST) group at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge aims to fill a Postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate position, for 2 years with the possibility of extension, subject to funding. This position is intended as a group position in a research programme on 'Atomistic insight into liquid-phase heterogeneous catalysis' involving Assistant Professor Christoph Schran, who leads the FAST group.

We are particularly interested in the application and methodological development of machine learning techniques to combine electronic structure and modern sampling techniques in liquid-phase heterogeneous catalysis. Experience in some, but not all, of these areas is expected from the successful candidate. In close collaboration with the members of the group and other groups in Cambridge, the role holder will push forward the methodological description of reactions at solid/liquid interfaces and apply these techniques to reactions of high societal relevance, such as CO2 reduction or water splitting.

As part of the Lennard-Jones Centre, which brings together the materials and molecular modelling community in Cambridge, the role holder will be in direct exchange with other leading groups in the field. Furthermore, embedded in the Theory of Condensed Matter group, the role holder will overall be connected to a lively and stimulating scientific and social environment, with regular activities ranging from internal and external group seminars, graduate lectures, and introductory presentations on topics of current research.

The role holder will be expected to conduct postdoctoral-level research in the FAST group. Collaboration with other members of the group, in particular other postdocs and junior members, as well as collaborations across and outside the department are highly encouraged. The role holder will also be expected to contribute to the general life and scientific environment of the group, e.g., contributing to the organisation of internal and external seminars, and offering graduate-level lectures based on their current topic of research.

The successful candidate will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Physics, Theoretical or Computational Chemistry, Materials Modelling (or closely related disciplines), with a proven track record in conducting and publishing scientific research in modern materials and molecular modelling. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in using machine learning to combine electronic structure and sampling techniques in the study of complex materials, as well as candidates with experience in computational heterogeneous catalysis. The candidate will also have the ability to manage workload, engage in collaborations and communicate results in talks and presentations.

Research Associate in Quantum Networks (Fixed Term)

A position exists for Research Associate/Research Assistant in Quantum Networks.

The aim of the role is to develop technologies for an efficient optical interface to a nuclear-spin memory in semiconductor quantum dots, and perform proof-of-concept experiments on storage of spin-photon entanglement. An interface between a stationary matter and a flying optical qubit is a fundamental building block of the inter-connects that will make quantum technologies useful on a large scale. This project will leverage and combine recent developments in spin coherence and optical collection efficiency with single quantum dots to make such leap forward possible. This is an ambitious research program, with a strong interdisciplinary nature, across quantum optics and semiconductor spin physics.

The successful candidate will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD Physics or a cognate discipline with a proven track record in spectroscopy of semiconductor materials, spin resonance techniques, and time-resolved correlation measurements. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in experimental quantum optics with either atoms or solid-state emitters as demonstrated by publications in major journals. A solid understanding of open quantum systems and of microfabrication of optical systems is required.

The candidate will also have the ability to perform coding relevant to analysis and instrumentation work, to design mechanical and electrical components of the experimental apparatus, and to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature.

The Maxwell Centre, hosted by the Cavendish Laboratory, is the hub for academia-industry interactions. It serves several departments across the Schools of Physical Sciences and Technology, bringing in external partnerships with industry. The Maxwell Centre offers impulse, a 12-week hybrid programme followed by alumni Masterclasses and mentoring as a catalyst for both entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, with a sharp focus on the development of high-potential technology innovation into a commercial proposition and prioritising "high potential" business cases. Since 2017, impulse alumni have raised over £134m in funding and investments.

We now invite applications for the role of Programme Manager to support the Head of impulse. This role will play a crucial part in contributing to impulse¿s long term growth, developing and carrying out strategic plans for scaling up the programme. The role is primarily working within a small impulse team and the Maxwell Centre, as well as working collaboratively in the delivery of the programme with short-term staff, external consultants, liaising with academic/ professional stakeholders from the departments of the University and over 200 entrepreneurs, investors, business experts, and innovation community.

The role requires different levels of management skills from strategic to operational level responsibilities to ensure the successful delivery of impulse, including financial planning, administration, marketing and sales and detailed programme management.
