Cavendish Astrophysics

The Hydrogen Epoch of Re-ionization array (HERA) has just joined the family of SKA precursors. HERA, which is being built in the Karoo reserve in South Africa, targets the detection of the Epoch of Re-ionization (EoR) signal and will produce fundamental contributions to the understanding of the science and the development of techniques and technology for EoR science.

Cavendish Astrophysics has a a key role in SKA (through the lead of the Science Data Processing consortium, the Science and Engineering Advisory Committee or the design of the aperture array antennas and project engineering for the Aperture Array and Design Consortium for example) but also in HERA. For HERA we are designing the new broadband feed to achieve a wider bandwidth and smoother passband response as well as greater sensitivity, the RF receivers and we also participate in the commissioning and science simulation of the telescope.

We are currently building a 3-dish HERA prototype to support our activities at the MRAO in Lords bridge (the pictures below show the current progress of the work).
