Planning starts for HIRES on the E-ELT

On March 22nd the detailed planning of the HIRES instrument for the ESO European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT)
has officially started (Phase A). HIRES will be a high spectral resolution spectrograph (observing both in the optical and infrared
bands) that will tackle some of the most important open questions in astrophysics. HIRES will be developed by an international
consortium involving also UK. Cambridge contributed to the development of some key subsystems of the infrared spectrograph.
Cambridge also contribute to the definition of the instrument science cases, through the involvement of Roberto Maiolino (Project
Scientist of HIRES), Didier Queloz and Martin Haenelt.
