Cavendish Astrophysics

The Astrophysics Group in the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge, has up to two vacancies for Postdoctoral Research Associates working on Petabyte-scale astronomy, the design of computing and software for the Square Kilometre Array observatory, and on advanced software techniques applied in general to astronomy. We are expecting to appoint for a starting date in March or April 2018.

The positions will be funded by EC H2020 programme ASTERICS project and by Cambridge University's STFC grant for SKA development. These grants support the Astrophysics Group's work in the development of scientific computing for SKA by providing leadership in the design of the "Science Data Processor" (SDP) system for SKA, working towards a vision for a European community-facing SKA compute centre and developing methodologies applicable for data mining in large archives and across multiple wavebands and observatories.

The successful candidates will have a good first degree (2.1 or equivalent) and PhD in Astronomy, Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline. They will work with existing group members and with astronomers, computer scientists and engineers across the SKA SDP consortium and EU ASTERICS collaboration to research, develop and implement software for Petabyte-Scale Astronomy. The role will include selection, implementation and in-depth testing and analysis of execution frameworks that will allow scale out of data analysis to 100s of nodes in a HPC-like environment. A background in high performance computing, and numerical processing of data is essential. Experience of astronomy would be beneficial.

The closing date for applications is 6 February 2018. Interviews are expected to be held in February.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year until the 30 April 2019 in the first instance.

Applicants should provide a Curriculum Vitae (CV), covering note, list of publications and a statement of research interests together with the contact information of two referees.
