PhD Studentship in Galaxy Formation (Fixed Term)

The Extragalactic group led by Prof. Roberto Maiolino, within the Astrophysics Group of the Cavendish Laboratory and the Kavli Institute for Cosmology, is inviting applications for PhD studentships beginning in October 2018.

The PhD thesis project will be in one of the areas of research of the group, which broadly covers the investigation of galaxy formation, as well as their coevolution with supermassive black holes across the cosmic epochs, through an observational approach, by using data coming from observatories operating at different wavelengths (including the Atacama Large Millimeter Telescope -ALMA-, the ESO Very Large Telescope -VLT-, the Manga-Sloan4 survey, the Hubble Space Telescope -HST-, and soon the James Webb Space Telescope -JWST-). The data from these facilities will be used to investigate the dynamics of galaxies, their content of heavy elements, their star formation properties, and their accreting supermassive black holes, in order to shed light on the mechanisms driving galaxy evolution. These studies exploit samples spanning from galaxies in the local Universe to the most distant objects known. Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3.5 years in the first instance. The student must complete the programme in 42 months.

The award covers all University fees and provides a tax-free stipend of £14,553 p.a. (index linked). The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.

This project is suitable for a candidate with a good Masters degree (Masters pass) in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics. The successful candidate would have interests, and preferably some experience in areas of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Informal enquiries should be made in the first instance to Prof. Roberto Maiolino (r.maiolino@mrao.cam.ac.uk).

Deadline for submission of the applications is the 8th of December 2017.

To make an application, follow the procedure outlined on the University website https://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/how-do-i-apply, making sure to mention the AP research group and the name of Prof. Roberto Maiolino in the form.

It is IMPORTANT that, when submitting the application, in parallel Prof. Roberto Maiolino is also notified of the submission through an e-mail to r.maiolino@mrao.cam.ac.uk and kavlisec@ast.cam.ac.uk.
